Preppy Sign Tutorial on Photoshop
In this tutorial I'm using Photoshop 7.0 but it works for any photoshop.
In this tutorial you'll learn to make a Preppy style sign on photoshop, kinda Like this
Step 1-Choose your SM Picture. Here's the one I'm using.. You'll also need a color scheme, I'll be using this one.. If you need a color scheme Go here!.
*Also, before you start your sign, make sure your color scheme is saved as a gradient!
Step 2-Have these two patterns saved to your photoshop. This line pattern and This striped pattern.   If you need help defining patterns on photoshop Go here.
Step 3-You'll also need some brushes. I love using These ones but you can really use any you want. If you need help defining brushes Go here.
Step 4-Now, open up your SM Picture on Photoshop. Go to your Toolbar and choose your Polygon lasso tool. Shown here.
Step 5-Start outlining your sitemodel with the polygon lasso tool. Try and get as close to the SM with the tool. Once you have her/him completely outlined there should be a dancing line around the model. Like so.
Step 6- Now with the dancing line still around the model and your lasso tool still selected Right Click>and hit Select Inverse. Shown here.
Step 7-Now hit "Delete" on your keyboard.
Step 8-Now this doesn't nessecarily apply to everyone but you might have to go in and delete some pieces of the background, like on mine in between the strap on the camera and the model. If you have a little piece like that, then do the same thing you didn in Step 6 and delete the piece.
HERE'S WHAT I HAVE NOW.
Step 9-Now that you have your SM Cutout and such go to your layers pallette. Right click on the layer with your SM on it, [that should be your only later at this point] and hit "Blending Options" Shown Here
Step 10- Now on your blending options menu go to "Stroke". Change the Size to "2" and change the color to "white". Shown here
Step 11-Now, on your layers pallette, make a new layer by hitting the button SHown here. Drag the new layer underneath your first one, then hit "CTRL+E". Your layers should now have merged into one.
Step 12- Now go to Blending Options again, go to stroke again, and this time instead of using a color your going to use a gradient using the colors from your color scheme. Your settings should look like this [only with your color scheme :) ]
Step 13-Now your going to repeat Step 11, and then go to blending options again on your new merged layer. Match your settings to mine. [Your line pattern will look different than mine, but thats the pattern you want to use!]
HERES WHAT I HAVE SO FAR.
Step 14-Now, click on the gradient tool [shown here] on your tool bar, and then go up the bar on top and click on the color chooser thing [Shown here]. Now choose your color scheme-gradient from the list. Shown here.
Step 15-Now create a new layer on your pallette and drag underneath your sitemodel layer. [DON'T HIT CTRL+E] Now make a line on your new layer with your gradient tool and let go. You should now have a gradient behind your Sitemodel.
HERE'S WHAT I HAVE .
Step 16-Now go to your brushes, and select a brush you want to use. I usually use the note brush from the pack in the beginning, sometimes I use This one. Now just place your brush so its all around your Sitemodel.
WHAT MINE LOOKS LIKE.
Step 17-Now go back to your layers pallette and right click on the PICTURE of your sitemodel on your SM laye and click "Select Layer Transparency. Shown here.
Step 18- Once around your SM is selected [Like this] go to Filter>Modify>Expand [Shown here]. Choose somewhere between 10-14. I usually choose 11
Step 19- Now on your keyboard hit Shift+Ctrl+C a couple of times. Then hit Shift+Ctrl+V. Your layers pallette should look like This. Delete the layer with your gradient on it. Your pallette should look like this
Step 20-Now you can adding a stroke around your gradient and SM by repeated Steps 9-13. You don't necessarily have to but I like to. If you don't want to, just choose your First layer and merge it by hitting "ctrl+e". You should just have a line pattern around your SM now.
If you are Adding the white and gradient strokes too, then just delete the second layer.
Heres what I have
Step 21-Now create a new layer and drag it underneath your SM layer. Change your foreground color to white and fill the layer with the paintbucket tool. See here
Step 22-Now define This as a brush.
Now make your foreground color black and [on your white layer] go your brush pallette and select your vector brush. Put it on your Sign so that it fills up the whole picture.
Like here!
Step 23-Now with your White/Vector layer still selected click your magic wand tool on your tool bar. Go to the top bar and Match your settings to mine
Step 24-Now choose one of the colors from your color scheme. Then go back to your sign, and on the white/vector layer and your magic wand tool selected, select one of the slivers of your vector. Then go to your paint bucket tool and fill it with yout color. See here!.
Step 25-Now repeat step 24 on the next piece of your vector, except with the next color in your color scheme. Do this until your whole vector is filled up with the colors from your color scheme.
HERES WHAT I GOT once I'm done filling in my vector!
Step 26-Now you don't exactly have to do this, but it makes filling in your vector much easier. With your magic wand tool selected, and "Contigious" unselected choose one of the colors on your vector. All of the pieces of your vector of the color should now be selected. Should loook like this.
Once you have that selected, on your keyboard hit "Ctrl+J" This should have created a new layer of just those pieces of vector of that color. Now do that for all of the colors on your vector. Your layers should look like this now
*FYI, When your choosing the colors on your vector you have to be on the first vector layer, the one with all the colors on it. Otherwise you won't be able to select the colors.
Step 27-Now choose your first color layer. It can be whatever one you want. Then go to bledning options and go to pattern overlay. Choose your striped pattern and Match your settings to mine!
Step 28-Now go to your next color layer. Choose the brush you want to use and start putting the brushes in your vector. Shown here
Here's what it looked like once I was done with my brushes
Step 29-Now choose another brush and do the same thing on your next color layer, then do the same for your next layers as well until they're all filled up with brushes or patterns.
Heres what I have
Step 30-Now, on your FIRST color layer, go to blending options go to stroke and choose your line pattern. Set the stroke width to 1. Shown here
Step 31- Do Step 30 to your next to layers as well. There's really no need to do it to the last color layer, but if you want to you can.
Heres's my final product..
*I know mine looks a little messed up, I had to start over from the begining half way through and it got alittle messed up in my haste.
And Voila! Just add some text and you ma'am/sir are All done! :D
